Grocery Manufacturers Association and Food Marketing Institute Launch New Nutrition Labeling System Thursday, January 27, 2011 (942 reads)
Food and beverage manufacturers and retailers, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and Food Marketing Institute launched Nutrition Keys, a voluntary front of pack nutrition labeling system that places calories, saturated fat, sodium and total sugars content on packaging. The Nutrition Keys icon on some products will also display information about "nutrients to encourage" that are important for a healthy diet but are under-consumed by the general population, including fiber, vitamin D and iron.

Reportable Food Registry Works to Prevent Illness, says FDA Thursday, January 27, 2011 (654 reads)
In its first annual report on the efficacy of its Reportable Food Registry (RFR), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that it is preventing foodborne illness outbreaks. The report summarizes use of the online food safety reporting tool during its first year, from September 2009 to September 2010. There were 2,240 entries logged during the period, including 229 primary reports, with 1,872 follow-up reports and 132 amended reports, the FDA said.

Milk Production for 2010 Up 1.8% over 2009 Thursday, January 27, 2011 (743 reads)
The recent World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report indicated that milk production for 2010 totaled 192.7 billion lbs., up 1.8% from 2009. After a slight decline in 2009, production is resuming the up-trend. The report also stated that USDA estimates milk production to increase another 1.4% this year.

USDA Predicts Rising Food Prices in 2011 Thursday, January 27, 2011 (737 reads)
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said it expects the Consumer Price Index to rise by 2 to 3 percent in 2011, ending a period of near-stagnant food price inflation over the past two years. The USDA said that higher food commodity and energy prices were behind the expected rise in prices, and the impact is likely to be even greater for meat and dairy prices, which were hit by higher feed costs in 2010.

Applications are now available from 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. (3 A SSI) for candidates interested in obtaining certification as a 3-A SSI Certified Conformance Evaluator (CCE). Individuals who meet application requirements will be eligible to sit for the accreditation exam on May 16, 2011, at The Wyndham Milwaukee Airport Hotel and Convention Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in conjunction with the 3-A SSI 2011 Annual Meeting and Education programs.
